My friend and I took our kids out strawberry picking this morning. I’ve heard of people doing it for years around here, but never had my act together early enough to get to the fields on time. (For most farms around here, this is one of the last few days to pick, or else they’re already done with it.)
Truth be told, I didn’t have my act together this year either. My friend did. She planned the date. I did the research. We made it in time. We’re a good team. Apart from each other, just bumps on a log.
Not really. At least not for her. For me? True.
Anyway, the kids had fun. Luke’s favorite part was running up and down the rows in the fields and every 15 minutes or so yelling out, “I found one!”
Yeah. Extremely helpful. But he had lots of fun. And I still owe him for the whole birthday incident.
Here are some photos from the day. You enjoy while I go look up a recipe for strawberry jam….
- Mommy and kids with full buckets!
- He found one!
- Very proud of her pickins
- Strawberries and buddies, what could be better?
- He’s so excited, and he just can’t hide it.

Oh, man, you’re kidding me. You mean we missed strawberry picking season again?
Sigh. Perhaps I can tempt my son with worm picking instead–I hear they’re year round. But I don’t think I’ll be looking for any jam recipes, if it’s all the same to you.
Great photos, by the way.
I remember when me mum would go out and pick the berries. Very tasty they was. Have thought about going for a while meself, but now I figure might as well just wait till the little nipper gets old enough to join in. He does like his strawberries though. Really enjoys going out and seeing what fruits places have for him. One would think that more restraunts would have a fruit cup, but mainly it’s just whatever the waiters can find at the bar.
houndrat: Yeah. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Though a few farms had it til the end of this week. I’ll stay away from the worm picking. Wouldn’t want to have to find a recipe for worm jam.
RG: He’s actually just the right size for getting under those plants right now!!! Red Robin has a cantaloupe option in their kids meal. Bob Evans does a nice fruit and yogurt cup for the kids. Let you know if I think of anywhere else.
The kids are getting so big!!!
Let me just say, I think you should forget the birthday incident. You can’t have regrets for things that can’t be changed. I’ve learned that the hard way years ago, but yeah, I know, it’s easier said than done.
Did you find your strawberry jam recipe? My gramma used to make THE BEST strawberry jelly… I remember one time when I was a little kid and mom took me to the grocery. We went down the condiment aisle, and I asked “Why do they sell jelly when people can just go to Gramma’s house and get it?”
I have the recipe if you want it.
Lynn: They are, aren’t they? It’s crazy. I think I’ve gotten over the birthday thing now.
There are only a couple of things that I’ve done concerning the kids that still really bother me, and I think I’ve gotten past the guilt parts of them and try to just take them now as lessons learned.
Mrs. R: I did find one. Not bad, but wayyyyy sugary. I’d love to have a grandma recipe on hand for the next time I have a bunch of strawberries. Thanks.
That sounds so fun, I love Strawberries, you little Luke is too cute!
Liz: It really was! I gotta make sure we get there in time next year. And thanks. He is a cutie, with attitude.
