Hi Hop! I do think it is an honor more now than a specific responsibility, but I would hope that people still choose someone that they would trust with their child to represent that role in the ceremony. Owen's parents are soooo blessed to have you around to have that kind of influence on their son, and to help them raise him in the ways of respect and love. I'm jealous that we don't have you here! Though we are blessed to have good friends here, too, that fill that role for our kids.

Hope you are doing wonderfully. :)

Hey, thanks for all your replies on the Godparent thing. A Godparent is normally of the same demonination but that is not really necessary, except, in the Catholic Church, the Godparent(s) must be Catholic. The intent is to assist the parents in raising the child in the Catholic traditions. In the old days, the Godparent(s) were the one's who raised the child in case of death of parents or if the parents just abandon the child. Today, it is just an honor, but I would not hesitate for an instant if the responibility for raising him to manhood fell on me. But, what this says to me is that these young folk think that I am the kind of person they want their son to be associated with and for that I am truly honored. I will treat Owen with respect and work with is father in raising him to love God,honor and respect his parents and all his human Brothers and Sisters. Isn't that what responsible "parents" do for their children?

But I don't even have a kid yet! Now I have to worry about dying? Geesh, no pressure! How do you bring that up in casual conversation? "Hey, not that I'm planning anything or whatever, but in case I die, will you take my kids? Oh, and pass the butter, these taters are really dry."

Rantz: Yeah, I think you're safe now. In most cases, those are no longer the expectations of a godparent. Best to clarify that with them, though! And it's always good to figure out who gets the kids before it's an actual issue.

Finding someone of common faith could be interesting. Then to decide who would raise my kids if something were to happen, don't know how to decide. Most of my friends who have kids are great parents, but would I wish my kids on them or would they be able to handle more kids? What a horrible thought.

Rantz: To the best of my knowledge, it was a person (or people) you asked to stand up during the baptism of your child who would commit to helping you raise your child in your common faith. I know that in some instances, certain churches have not allowed your chosen godparent to be anyone outside of your denomination. I think it has also had connotations of the godparents being the people to raise your child(ren) should you die. In many instances today, it is just a symbolic choice of a good friend who stands with you for the ceremony. For us, since we didn't have the kids baptized, but did an infant dedication instead, we didn't have anyone specifically named as godparents.

There's more reading for your long day. ;)

What exactly is the role of the Godparent? I have wondered that for a while now. I have heard the term thrown around alot and now that there is a chance to have a child of my own, I should find out if it's something I need to consider, or more truthfully, something Mrs. Grotto needs to start considering.
