My youngest, that is. I put him down for his nap without his favorite blankie. He had his ever faithful pacifier (the first of my three kids to use one), but his blankie was still in the dryer. I would have waited to put him down for his nap until the blanket was dry, but, as you can see from this photo, he waits on no one and nothing when he’s ready for his nap. His paci, his blanket, and he’s ready to go. Even if it’s on the kitchen floor.
Anyway, a friend gave me a brand new fleece blankie that she had made for my daughter (thanks, friend!) just last night, so I thought it might hold him over just until his own blankie was dry. It was the same material as his duckie blankie, I thought it might fly.
I was wrong. He did lie down and let me lay it over him, and then he just looked at me funny, as if to say, “Just what do you think you’re trying to pull, lady? Are you high? Do you think I’m stupid? I’m one year old, not one week old.” I left the room anyway, since he wasn’t screaming…..yet.
That lasted about 10 minutes. Then he was crying, and screaming, and certain that I didn’t love him. How could I, if I thought even for a second that any blankie, no matter how wonderful it was, could take the place of duckie blankie in his crib?
That’s right when the dryer buzzed. And I got to be the hero bringing in the wonderfully warm blankie that now smelled of April freshness and not pee (which is why it was being washed in the first place). I think I’m forgiven. Only time will tell.
Next you will know better. Pee does not go on your youngest child’s blankie. You save that for outside, next to the swing set.
/makes note to self: Do not invite Rantz over once swingset is built.
It’s funny how they can tell the difference. Glad that Mommy was a hero!
You know, I didn’t want to give up my blankie. You’ll have to fight that battle later. My mom had to cut it up in little tiny pieces and give me one piece at a time till it was all gone. Poor shrinking blankie…
Oh, Kerri, might want to walk the long way around the shed… No swingset… Sorry. I’d give you mine only we just converted it to a bird feeder.
Kailani: It’s good to be the hero sometimes!
Rantz: Thanks for the warning. @Blankie: My friend is doing that with her daughter, too. Cutting up pieces so less chance of losing blankie altoghether. Very smart…
