Remember this song from Sesame Street? I think people must think of this whenever my three children are together. The two oldest look very similar to each other. The third has similar features, but other more prominent features that definitely set him apart.
I’ve been (jokingly) accused of child-snatching at church because he looks so different from me. At Cracker Barrel, I walked in by myself with the three of them. A grandmotherly type lady, with a face full of amusement, asked, “Are they all yours?” I was very proud to answer, “Yes.”
I am very proud of all of my children. Honestly. I’m equally in love with each of them, frustrated by each of them, challenged by each of them, and inspired by each of them. I am filled with pride and joy at being their mom.
But, I have to admit, I am especially enchanted by the features of my youngest. After bearing two children who look remarkably similar to me, I was tiring of the question, “Are you ever going to have one who looks like your husband?” Truthfully, our oldest has features VERY similar to her dad, but the dark hair that is the color of mine automatically makes her evidently my daughter, and not evidently his. Even though her hair is as straight and fine as his was, with not a hint of the thickness or curl of mine.
Our second looks just like me, only male, and much younger (duh). Our third really looks nothing like me. His gold-spun hair and sparkling blue eyes are all Daddy. And I prayed that he would have those features. I know, I know, some may find that shallow. And I did pray first just for his good health. But, I believe that God hears us, and takes delight in bringing us joy. And so, I asked, if He didn’t care either way, could I please have a blonde, blue-eyed baby?
Now, you have to know me to know why this was a surprising request to most. I am an Hispanic female, with the darker skin, hair, and eyes that are typical of Hispanics. No one believed that I could have a blonde, blue-eyed baby. I happen to know a bit about genetics, though, and knew that it was possible for me.
Everyone told me to give up the dream. Even my obstetrician, who delivered all three of my babies, and who I happen to adore, kept telling me there was no way. “Give it up, Kerri. It’s not going to happen.”
HA! Here are my babies:

Some people try til they get a girl or a boy. We tried til we got a blonde.
Not really.
Now them’s some cute kids!
Thanks for your unbiased, objective opinion.
I do happen to agree.

Life really is simple, Love God, love yourself, love your spouse, love your childen and your parents and Kerri (huh), yes, we must love our sisters..God’s 11th Commandment, (I have 2). Say hello to all.

Hop
Your description of the three darlings is spot on. And they’re all gorgeous. Wonder where they got that from?
/me runs
Hop: I really am honored that you read here. Thanks, both for the encouragement to keep writing, and for the wonderfully sweet words about our family. What lucky sisters to have you for a brother! I bet you were not at all a pain to them growing up.
Hsien: Pbbttt
Hsien: Oh yeah, and thanks for the kind words about my babies. heehee
As I was reading your post, I was hoping you’d have photos . . . and there they were. Your children are so beautiful!
Kailani: Thanks! Yeah, you can’t write a post like this without photos, can you? That would be just cruel. And, this way people know I’m not just making things up. Though I guess I could’ve just surfed the net for these….
How sweet! Yes, God does hear our prayers, He doesn’t always answer them when we want them but it sure looks like it in your case. :O) You are so blessed!
Mary: Thanks for visiting! Yeah, I am blessed in so many ways. I really have no reason to ever complain! (Sadly, it doesn’t always stop me.
)
Beautiful children. Like you, I’m dark haired, dark eyed (Italian). When I had my FIRST blonde haired blue eyed baby I was surprised. I had expected a miniature me! Didn’t know I carried the recessive gene for blue eyes. NO ONE in my family had blue, only light brown/and one or two hazels.
So I chalked it up as a fluke. Surely the next one would be dark. My second son had my brown eyes, but was definitely a toe head blonde. (Now his hair is brown) My last two both have the blue/grey eyes and light brown and blonde hair.
So God is full of surprises and I love the fact that my kids have my features but have my husbands coloring!
Gina: Thanks! And thanks for visiting. Isn’t God cool? I love life’s surprises (most of them, anyway.) I was kind of hoping that one of them would have my skin coloring, but they’re all pretty alabaster. The oldest two do tan up nicely, though.
What beautiful children!!!
That is so funny about trying till you got a blonde…
My husband is Italian and I was blonde as a child and we both have brown eyes. But our little girl has blue eyes and red hair. What a fun surprise.
Susan: Thanks! And thanks for visiting here.
How fun to have a little girl with her own unique features! Do you get the same strange looks (Where did she come from?) as we do with our youngest?
Cute kids! It’s just too bad they’re not as cute as mine http://www.bnpositive.com/me/thefam/2006easter.htm
I totally understand what you mean.
My first looks like me. My last looks like my husband. My middle child is just a cutie but looks like no one I know.
My brother-in-law’s kids are even more odd. He’s German/Polish, she’s Egyptian. One stick straight blonde-haired, blue-eyed rosey cheeked child (ironically named Layla for “dark”) and an olive-skinned, black curly haired, dark eyed child.
Ain’t genetics grand?
bn: The first ever mnim poll! You’re kids and mine, who’s cuter? heehee. But, man, could your little guy look more like you? At least in photos!!!
Kelly: I love the possibilities with genetics! I imagine your SIL gets the same strange looks when walking around with her blondie as I do!
I for one am not surprised that you had a blond, blue-eyed baby. Actually I would have been surprised if one of your children had not turned out that way! Afterall Luke’s father has, well had, blond hair and blue eyes. Your father also had blond hair and blue eyes. And although you are Hispanic on your mother’s side, your great-great-grand-father had blond hair and blue eyes. As a matter of fact, all his children were fair except for your great-grand-mother who looked typically Indian, (from the Huicholi tribe) but her 5 sisters all had light brown and auburn hair and hazel eyes. Hmm! (In Tlaltenango, Mexico, this was not rare, there were many pure Spaniards at the time.) Therefore it’s not a surprise that your cousins Donny and Debbie had blond hair when they were young. Debbie may change her hair color every six months, but she still has blue eyes! Besides, if you would go to some of the family get togethers sometimes (just kidding), you would see that there are other cousins of yours; Devin, Natasha, and Isabella for example, who all have, yes….blond hair and blue eyes! Arianna is the only one with green eyes. At a recent family reunion Jennifer and Dan, Isabella’s parents, looked at little Yvette with her black hair and dark brown eyes and said that they had hoped Isabella would come out looking typically Latina, but it was not to be! I guess they’ll just have to pray harder next time! I’m sure if they continue to have more kids though, the odds are they’ll have one looking just like Samantha or Jake!
Lynn-Now I know where my auburn highlights come from (you know, the ones that aren’t from the bottle, and the others that are not turning grey.)
I can’t see the pictures..
I found this post through “possibly realated posts”
Our third is also blonde and blue-eyed.. Seems like with the third one there is no ink left in the printer
holeycheese: Sorry it’s taken me so long to comment. I’ve been such a bad blogger lately!!! Yes, the photos were all there when I first posted it, but didn’t make it when we had to convert to a different server.
But I like your description of ink in the printer. I’ll have to use that one!
