I made couscous for the first time last night. It’s such a fun name for a food, and I thought it would help to broaden the family’s palate.
Now, Samantha’s generally a picky eater, so I really wasn’t sure how much whining there would be over this new food. But I was POSITIVE that there would be whining involved. And there was, right until she tasted it.
At the first bite, she looked at me and said, “Mom, I LOVE this rice.” She loved it! Can you believe it? I couldn’t. I kept looking at her and saying, “Really, you like the couscous?”
“Yes, Mom, it’s great. It is SO yummy.”
I was dumbfounded. Absolutely shocked. (No, it doesn’t take much.) Anyway, shocked until about my third bite of the new exotic, amazingly received, food. When I realized what it tasted like.
I’d bought the Parmesan variety. I looked at my husband and said, “This kinda tastes like Mac ‘n’ Cheese.”
No wonder she loved it so much.
Oooh.. I don’t know what couscous really is but if it tastes like Mac ‘n’ Cheese I’d like it too. =p
Interesting! I don’t like couscous. It’s so grainy, rolley, pebbly, and odd….
angelo: from dictionary.com: A pasta of North African origin made of crushed and steamed semolina.
Basically, it seemed like a very grainy pasta. But it was yummy. Can you ever go wrong with Parmesan?
Hsien: It is a bit odd. And I wonder if we even had real couscous, or an Americanized version of it. We’re so good at maintaining the integrity of foreign foods.
I’ve been wanting to try couscous. My sister really likes it and, now, with your recommendation, I might just be brave enough. I wonder if my picky son would like it? He like Mac & Cheese….but this will probably “look” different, won’t it? Oh well…
Hey, I hope it is ok that I linked you on my site. I really like reading your stuff and think my friends would too. If it’s not ok, let me know
Hi Gina! Thanks SO MUCH for the link. I’m both excited and honored! I only had a quick moment to check yours out the other night, but I’m heading back there soon. I think I’ll have tons of questions for you about homeschooling this fall. And excited to see that you enjoy Junie B. as well. She cracks us up.
Yes, the couscous does look different, and is a totally different texture. But remember to get the Parmesan to give yourself a fighting chance when you serve it!
